The recommendations by GUC staff that only electric vehicle charging banks be charged higher and different rates for electricity and base facility charges is discriminatory. Democrats are lapping Republicans in this year’s election fund-raising, and could that be because GOP donors are wondering what they get for their money? The final outstanding N.C. General Assembly primary election from earlier this month is resolved. Ten-term Democratic N.C. Rep. Michael Wray conceded Monday after his election protests and recounts didn’t change the result favoring challenger Rodney Pierce. Wray says he won't ask the N.C. State Board of Elections to review the decisions by elections boards in the three counties that comprise the reconfigured 27th N.C. House District dismissing his formal protests. Wray's requested recounts wrapped up Monday with no new margin changes. Results show Pierce 34 votes ahead of Wray. The decision set the stage for the State Board of Election to certify race results Tuesday.
The North Carolina official tasked with carrying out the state's new legalized sports wagering law says betting from smartphones and desktops got off to a “strong start.” The N.C. Lottery Commission heard on Wednesday preliminary monetary numbers from the first day and first week of sports gambling that began at noon March 11. Sterl Carpenter says that during the first week close to $200 million had been wagered, with $142 million in winnings paid out. The rollout began as the Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was about to start. Eight entities can now offer mobile and desktop betting in the state.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris teamed up in Raleigh for an event focused on promoting their health care agenda. North Carolina was the final stop on Biden's tour of battleground states since his State of the Union earlier this month. Polls show Democrats have an advantage over Republicans on health care. Democrats are looking to push their advantage as they face a likely rematch with former President Donald Trump this year. Biden and Harris also attended a campaign fundraiser in Raleigh. Their visit comes the day the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case about access to a widely used abortion pill.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been promoting their health care agenda during an appearance in Raleigh, North Carolina. It's the final stop on Biden's tour of battleground states after his State of the Union address. Biden on Tuesday said Democrats like him and Harris would preserve access to care while Republicans would reverse gains made over the past decade and a half. Polls show Democrats have an advantage over Republicans on health care. Former President Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee, is denying that he wants to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act. Trump said in a social media post that he wants to make it better, stronger and less expensive.

A fundraiser for President Joe Biden in New York City that also stars Barack Obama and Bill Clinton is raising a whopping $25 million. Biden's campaign says Thursday night's event sets a record for the biggest haul for a political event. The Radio City Music Hall fundraiser provides a gilded exclamation mark on a recent burst of campaign travel by Biden, who visited several political battlegrounds in the last few weeks. The Democratic president has a significant fundraising advantage over Republican rival Donald Trump, with more than four times as much cash on hand by the end of February.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has been granted $60 million in immediate federal aid but warns of a “very long road ahead” after the Baltimore bridge collapse. Moore says “the best minds in the world” are working on plans to clear the debris and move the cargo ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Massive barges carrying cranes are heading to Baltimore to begin the challenging work of removing twisted metal and concrete from the blocked shipping channel. Officials say they’ll need to clear the wreckage before resuming the search for four workers who are still missing.
A 22-year-old man has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder in a frenzied deadly rampage that unfolded in a matter of minutes in a northern Illinois city. Christian Soto is also charged with seven counts of attempted murder and home invasion with a dangerous weapon following the attacks in Rockford Wednesday. Seven people were injured. Court and jail records show Soto appeared in court briefly Thursday afternoon and remains held without bond. He is next due in court Tuesday when a judge will determine if he stays in jail pending trial. Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd has said Soto acted alone. Authorities have released no information about a possible motive.
Authorities say a bus carrying worshippers headed to an Easter festival plunged off a bridge on a mountain pass and burst into flames in South Africa, killing at least 45 people. The only survivor of Thursday's crash was an 8-year-old child, who was receiving medical attention, according to authorities in the northern province of Limpopo. The Limpopo provincial government said the bus veered off the Mmamatlakala bridge and plunged 50 meters (164 feet) into a ravine before busting into flames. Search operations were ongoing, but many bodies were burned beyond recognition and were still trapped inside the vehicle.
